Our People [Train] Here: 5 Unconventional Spots for Veteran Workouts in Kyiv and the Region
Recovery after injuries, wounds, or illnesses caused by the war isn’t limited to hospitals and rehabilitation centers. Physical activity offers a space where veterans can not only regain endurance but also experience team spirit and find like-minded people. Across Ukraine, many initiatives offer free training sessions for veterans. Below is a list of notable ones in the Kyiv region.
Golf
The United by Golf sports club in Kozyn welcomes veterans every week. One round of golf equals 9–12 km of walking, providing balanced cardio activity. Veterans have been training here free of charge since 2015 — for many, it’s become more than just sport, but a form of therapy. Adaptive Climbing
The Climb to Life program at the Hyperion center offers adaptive climbing designed specifically for veterans. Here, participants can train with almost any injury, wound, or condition. The main goal is to help veterans socialize, build a supportive community, and conquer new heights — both on the wall and in life.
Wakeboarding
The team at Stav14 Wake Park in Kyiv has opened the world of water sports to veterans. The park provides adaptive equipment that allows safe and effective training during rehabilitation. It’s also where the Ukrainian national team prepared for the Invictus Games 2025 in Canada — all completely free of charge.
Wheelchair Basketball
The CBA Initiatives Center organizes wheelchair basketball training sessions at Svoi Arena. Several times a week, veterans gather to play together. These joint practices have become a tradition: the team meets twice weekly, and all that’s needed to join is comfortable clothing and the desire to play.
Wheelchair Rugby
Known for its intensity, this sport demands both strength and character. The Gentlemen NGO, founded by veterans Oleksii Tiunin and Oleksandr Androschuk, has become a space for those seeking adrenaline and teamwork. Despite the sport’s toughness, wheelchair rugby unites people, promotes physical and psychological recovery, and creates a community where everyone can find “their own.”
